Summer Like It's 1989.

Happy Wednesday, friends!

Today, I'm linking up with my mama friends, Erika and Shay for another Workin' It linkup and our hot topic of the month is how we keep our kids entertained all summer.

So I'll just jump on in!

We do...

...Pool Time...

...pool parties with friends...

...cold treats...

...sleepovers...

...the Beach Club...

...as well as the REAL beach!

We have pizza party picnics in the middle of the culdesac...

...play in discarded cardboard boxes...

...play in the dirt...

...with the waterhose...

...and in the rain.

We go fishing...

...ride scooters...(...and bikes and hoverboards)

...play in the backyard...

...take naps...(although not that often...)

...go to camps...

....watch Daddy on TV for the Elite 11 finals...

and take trips to see the grandparents.

Basically, we like to do summer like it's 1989.  As much as possible, anyway.

We live in a culdesac so bike riding, hoverboarding, ball playing, scooters, Nerf wars and hide-and-seek all can safely take place at any time of the day.  There are 3 other neighbor families that live in or right outside our culdesac that the boys are with every day. We also know (most of) our neighbors in the culdesac really well so we are always watching out for each other's kids.

My boys are 9 and 7 now and I don't feel the need to entertain them all day anymore.  Craig and I are both pretty old school when it comes to the boys.  We want them to have childhoods like ours were as much as possible.

We both grew up playing outside all day long with our friends down the street.  We'd ride our bikes everywhere, play in the sprinklers, jump on trampolines, build forts, eat popsicles, play catch, play basketball, and make up dances.  (Ok, so maybe only one of us did that.)  And then we'd beg for a sleepover every other night.

We want the boys to have similar memories.  We don't overschedule them during the summer.  (Last week was a total fluke and it made me really anxious.  I can't imagine doing that all summer.)  We want them to just wake up, grab some breakfast, and watch a little TV until it's an acceptable time for them to go knock on someone's door and ask if so-and-so can play.

Matthew and Mason are completely capable of making their own breakfast (cereal, Eggos, frozen pancakes or ham and cheese croissants) and turning on the Disney channel or Netflix if they wake up before us. I love that they are independent enough to do this.  And they have been doing this for quite awhile now.

So that's how we do summer around here.  We are just busy enough with a camp or two, a couple of trips and this year, some football games.  But other than that, we keep summer simple and kid-friendly. #goplay

And speaking of trips, we are leaving for our first trip of the summer in a couple of days and I can't wait to get away for a little bit!  I'm planning on posting my Friday Favorites but we'll see how the trip goes. :)  I'll definitely be recapping our mini-vacay though sometime next week.

How do you do summer??  Let me know in the comments! (I love reading those!)

Have a beautiful Wednesday!!

  1. Love this.... this is how we do summer, as well! I literally have to drag my kids in each night.
Being 12 and 9, I don't have to entertain them all day either.
    What fun summer memories.
Have a fun little get away.

  4. That sounds a lot like our summer. We live in a similar neighborhood and the kids are always outside in the evenings riding bikes or they can be found in someone's back yard. It is pretty funny around 8:00 you can hear people stepping outside and yelling their kid's names to come back home for the night. We keep things pretty simple around here too! Have fun on vacation!
