SUPERMUTT! | CHARLIE'S DNA RESULTS

 Hey there sweet Charlie Bear!

Most of you know all about Charlie. He is our little 18lb fluffball that we adopted from a local rescue group here in the Dallas area back in June. We are all so obsessed with this dog but seriously--none more so than me.💕

I saw Charlie's picture pop up on the Paws of Love Animal Rescue's FB one day after months of searching and knew I had to have him! I'd tried for another dog they had just days before but the dog had ultimately gone to a family with other dogs in the home. So they were familiar with me and my application which ended up making things move very quickly!

I sent the rescue a private message, and things just fell into place SO easily. So basically the complete opposite of all the other attempts I'd made at being chosen for a dog. It was just meant to be. Within 24 hours I was picking him up, bringing him home, and preparing to surprise the rest of my family who was out of town visiting the grandparents and had NO idea what I was up to. 😉 (You can read all about this story HERE.) I couldn't believe it--after months of stressing, searching, disappointments and failed attempts, we finally found our boy!

We knew he was some sort of Shih Tzu mix but after that it as anyone's guess. We'd guessed Maltese or maybe Westie? But I wanted to know for sure.  So a few months ago, I ordered this Embark Dog DNA Kit so we could find out.

And then the test sat there for 2 months before I picked it up and opened the box. #ofcourse

Last month I finally pulled it out, swabbed Charlie's mouth and sent it off. It was a very easy process. You just swab their gumline, stick the qtip thing back in the case and pop it in the mail! Super easy!

Well, the results are in, friends and our little Charlie Bear is...

...kind of a Supermutt! 😂 Their word, not mine.

We now know that our little Chuck is not a Shih Tzu/Maltese mix or a Shih Tzu/Westie mix like we thought. He is actually a Shih Tzu/Lhasa Apso mix! Who would have guessed?!

He's definitely got other breeds in him too but his two main ones were Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso. These two breeds are SO similar. There is one of each pictured below but I don't even know which one is which!

Here's what his official results said.

When I was telling the boys about the results and said he was 8% "Supermutt", I didn't realize it at the time but Matthew thought a Supermutt was a type of breed. He didn't realize they meant he's just a whole mess of other dogs all mixed in. He was really hoping to see pictures of what a Supermutt looked like after I showed him pictures of Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos! 😂

Anyway, the results also showed us the parents, grandparents, and great grandparents lineage. So Charlie has some Miniature Schnauzer, Pekingese, and a little Corgi in him too! I mean how cute are all of those!?!

I love that I know for sure what all the main breeds he's mixed with are now. He'd clearly not close to a purebred anything unless you count Supermutt as a breed! 😉

We love our playful, spunky, smart, sweet, mischievous little guy so much!

I mean...

He is just the BEST!!

Want to test your own pup? There are several brands but the one we used was from Embark HERE (for just DNA and HERE for DNA & Health Screening). So happy we got some answers!

Charlie has a big day ahead with a trip to the groomers followed up by an interview for Doggie Daycare! Wish him luck! xoxo

    1. Thank you!! We are pretty lucky too! Except for when he's stealing our clothes off the bathroom floor and dragging them into the backyard while we're in the shower... 😂

  2. We did a DNA test for Homer last year. When I was looking for a rescue dog, I searched for a lab mix. His DNA showed he was 25% lab and then husky, great pyrenees, and terrier. It was interesting to see the family tree too. Glad to know we ended up with a dog with some kind of lab haha!

  4. We have a Lhasa Apso and she is just the best!!! The thing about Lhasas is their long coat - we have to get ours groomed every 6-8 weeks to keep it short. But looks like you won't have to do that! Another fun fact about Lhasas and Shih Tzus are they are some of the longest living dog breeds! Ours is 13 years old and 100% healthy!

    1. I never even considered him being part Lhasa Apso but I totally see it now! Charlie is actually at the groomers right now getting a little trim because he was getting matted! We are still learning how to take care of his long coat but we love it! Unfortunately, it looks like he'll be coming home today with a pretty short cut and we'll have to start from scratch. Rookie mistakes. 🤦‍♀️ So awesome about the long lives! I hope Charlie has that!
