Thoughts for Thursday. The Apple Cider Vinegar Smoothie

Today I'm linking up for the first time with Annie, Julie and Natalie for Thoughts for Thursday.  I knew this would be the perfect linkup for my thoughts on my first taste of Apple Cider Vinegar and how I managed to get it down!  (You won't gag!  I promise!!)

First off, yesterday I posted about wanting to try out the new Apple Cider Vinegar craze that is supposed to help with everything from weight loss to healthy hair.  I asked how you drink it and if it has worked for you with weight loss or any other health issues.  Everyone had a different way they drink it, it seemed! The only common denominator seemed to be that you all took 2 tablespoons in whichever way you did drink it.

These are a few of the things you said about drinking this nasty stuff.  (It smelled up my kitchen for at least an hour after I opened the bottle, I swear!  And my husband walked into the kitchen right after I poured some and was really grossed out.  He was definitely giving me the crazy eyes about this!)

Ways to drink it:
  • 2 tablespoons in 3-4 ounces of hot water right before bed
  • 2 tbsp in 4oz of juice
  • put on salads
  • 1 girl adds baking soda to hers (What!?!  How does that help!?)
  • My brave friend just "takes a swig" in the morning and at bedtime
  • 2 tbsp mixed with hot water, raw honey and lemon (or lemonade)
  • 1 tbsp with water at dinner
So I tried it yesterday morning in my smoothie because that sounded like the absolute best way to hide the taste.  I love my morning smoothies so I just did what I pretty much always do except I added in some ACV as well.  And it was surprisingly SO GOOD!!  It absolutely hid the taste and I could definitely drink it like this every day.  Score!!

Here's what I did.  (Please note that I basically dump stuff in and don't do a whole lot of measuring...)

Here's what I started out with.  I don't always add ALL of this to my smoothies but today I figured the more ingredients to hide the taste, the better!

INGREDIENTS: (These are all estimates.  Mine made about 30oz.  Enough for 2 smoothies.  Craig wanted to try one too after I told him to quit being a wuss.  How much it makes will vary depending on much of each ingredient you add.)
  • 3-4 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar, With the Mother (so you'll get about 2 tablespoons in each smoothie)
  • 1 cup of frozen strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 1 scoop Chocolate Protein Powder (We are using Syntrax Nectar "Chocolate Truffle" Protein Powder at the moment)
  • 1 heaping tablespoon of Plain Fat Free Greek Yogurt
  • A sprinkling of Flax Seed (adds a little bit of a nutty flavor)
  • 1-2 cups of almond milk (I honestly don't remember how much I used.  I just pour until I get the right consistency)
  • A handful or 2 of ice
Throw it all in and blend until smooth!  Pop it in a super cute stainless steel tumbler (preferably from That Inspired Chick on Etsy...wink wink) and you are good to go!

On a sidenote, I want to add that I never understood the point of a super expensive blender until recently.  Was it really worth an extra $300 or $400 to crush the ice a little better?  That was my thinking.  But then Craig's friend gave us one to borrow for awhile (he sells them) in hopes of getting us hooked and WHOA.  It is like magic.  Perfectly smooth every time.  No stop and start because you have to pull it off the base and shake it around a little trying to get it to finally "catch".  It's just so good and if you are a smoothie girl, I highly recommend it!!

Find the Vitamix here but if you are looking for something less expensive but still great, try the NutriBullet!  We had one for a couple of years before this one and it was better than any other blender we'd had previously.

For my cute stainless steel cup, go here!  I have them in my Etsy shop and they come in mint, hot pink, white and now navy (not listed yet)!  Plus they have a matching straw.  ;)

TIP:  A lid and a straw help so much!  A lid covers the smell some and the straw obviously keeps the taste at bay.

HOWEVER, this smoothie was awesome regardless of a lid and straw!  Yes, I could taste the ACV a very tiny bit but it definitely didn't make me gag or keep me from drinking my breakfast. :)  I'm not sure I'll ever be brave enough to just swig it like some of you brave souls do so this is a great way to get it in.

Isn't it pretty!?  If you try it, let me know!

Pin this if you want to come back later for the recipe!

I'm sure I'll be trying out new smoothie recipes that will work with hiding the ACV so if I find a good one, I'll be sure to post it!  I'll also keep you posted on whether or not I notice any changes in my health or my waistline!  ;)

Happy Thursday!

  1. Hi Amanda! Stopping by from the linkup. My mom drinks apple cider vinegar with hot water, lemon, and honey. I've wanted to try it but just can't bring myself to do it. Now, disguising it in a smoothy? I might be able to do that :)
