MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND | 2019

Friends.  Today Matthew "graduates" from 5th grade and I am trying not to lose it.  I honestly didn't think I'd be this way but knowing that he's done with this huge chapter in his life is wrecking me.  So I'm trying to focus on happy things instead like our Memorial Day weekend!

Craig was in Nashville from Thursday to Sunday working a football camp so he missed all the fun.  He ALWAYS has a camp on Memorial Day weekend which is such a bummer so I always have to go stag to the infamous Wall Party that Erika and her neighbors throw every year. :(

Love these pretty girls!

Today I'm linking up with  Sheaffer and Shay for What's Up Wednesday where we answer a bunch of questions about what we've been up to lately but honestly...I totally forgot it was WUW.  So we're going to pretend I'm just answering ONE question.  "What have we been up to lately?"  And rolling with that for the whole post.  ;)

So let's back up a little.

Friday kicked off all the fun with Field Day at the boys' school.  Definitely one of their favorite days of the year and Matthew's last one as an elementary school kid.  (Do they have field day in middle school?)

(Also, please note that I can finally hang my adorable Hello Summer door hanger from Blondiez Boutique! LOVE. IT.  Also worth noting are the flowers my green-thumbed mother planted for me the last time she was here.  They are doing well, Mom!  I haven't killed them yet!)

Saturday morning.  We were all excited to sleep late.  And then...

A lawnmower outside my window on a Saturday morning is my pet peeve.  7am.  8am.  Whatever.  When you are dreaming sweet dreams about laying on a beach somewhere and are startled awake by the sound of lawnmowers and leaf blowers in the yard next to you, let's just say it puts me in the WORST mood.  I said it on IG but I'll say it here too before people start to yell at me...  I know some people have to mow that early.  Especially in TX before the temps reach 90+.  And that it's not necessarily neighbors but their yard service peeps.  But that doesn't mean I can't hate it.

My mom used to do this to me when I was a teenager and since we lived in a small, one-story house, that lawnmower would literally but right up against my bedroom window.  It threw me into a hormonal rage every Saturday and all I could do was just scream into my pillow and then wait for Saved by the Bell to come on while I ate 6 slices of white toast with grape jelly, two glasses of cold milk and thought nothing of it.  😂 (Oh to be 110 pounds again.)

But it was my ONE DAY of the entire week to sleep late.  Gah, it drove me nuts!!  #thanksmom (Yes, I sound like a brat but weren't we all a little bratty as teenagers sometimes?)

The boys had friends over and tore around the neighborhood all day while I ran a few errands.  I grabbed these at Target, since I jumped on board the Keto train about a week and a half ago, because they have zero everything and are fizzy and fruity.   (PS:  They also work great as mixers.)

Saturday night, my babysitter came over to stay with the boys while I headed off to the Wall Party!  This year's party was the BEST and we had a great time chatting, laughing and dancing (some more than others--haha) until midnight.

I grabbed these earrings from Target while I was there earlier that day and almost didn't wear them because I thought maybe they were too much.  But once I saw everyone else, I knew I'd made the right call!  Ha!  Check out all those fun earrings!

Our Sunday consisted of a lot of this...

If you haven't snagged yourself one of my mermaid tumblers, yet, you really should!!  ;)  So fun! I filled mine with one of those fruity Sparkling Ices, sat down with my newest HGTV magazine and my Kindle and watched the boys fling themselves into the pool all afternoon.

I tried to talk to the boys into going over to the Smiles Charity Concert but they weren't interested.  So instead, I picked up a pizza for the boys and had a Keto-friendly non-pizza meal myself.  (Chicken.  Womp womp.)

After dinner, the boys took showers while I came back outside to read some more.  This was my first non-audio book of the summer (pretty much the only time I read instead of listen) and I couldn't wait to finish it.  It was such a great night with just the slightest chill in the air and I could even just make out the sounds of the concert from my backyard.

Mason came out to join me and play some games on his phone while I read.  We stayed out there until it was completely dark and then everyone crashed.

Craig's flight got in late that night so he was tired on Monday.  He came out to join us around the pool for a little while but after lunch, it was naptime for him.  haha  Not that I could blame him.  The boys did more swimming...

...but by the afternoon, they had disappeared off to their friend's house and that left me alone, sitting under my umbrella in my little happy place, having the most peaceful afternoon ever.  The weather was perfection under my umbrella.  A nice breeze, shady and warm.  I debated over getting up and getting a head start on Etsy orders of for the week or typing up a blog post in advance (for once) but in the end, my perfect set up won out.  I couldn't waste that beautiful Memorial Day afternoon WORKING!

So I finished my book.  I sat there basically all day reading because I HAD to know how the story ended.  At one point, I had to go in to throw in some more laundry and I was trying to read while doing it.  And it reminded me that THIS is why I'm an audiobook girl.  I get so wrapped up in it that I completely forgo all other responsibilities in order to keep reading. 😂 You never have to stop "reading" when you need to do laundry, dishes, brush your teeth...  But I do love my Kindle so I'm happy to be able to enjoy both during the summer months when I have a little more free time.

And that was our weekend!

The rest of our week is jam-packed with all sorts of fun stuff.  Graduation, 5th-grade pool party, middle school band meeting, last day of school stuff, baseball games and organizing end-of-the-year teacher gifts for all the boys' teachers.

So, if you need me today, I'll be the one in the green shirt trying to hold back ugly tears as her 11 y/o walks across the stage for the last time as an elementary schooler.  😢

PS!  If you're finding me for the first time through the link up, I have a fun Daily Deals FB group that you can join HERE!  And if you are a member and haven't been over to see it lately, come see what you've missed!  You can also find me on Instagram HERE.

  2. 1) 7:00 a.m. lawnmowers are the worst!! Especially if it is the only day you have to sleep in.

    2) My daughter too is finishing 5th grade this year. I asked her if she was going to miss her elementary school and she said "no" with no sadness....me on other hand wants to cry in the front of the school on Friday because I don't want her to go middle school.

    Question: What’s a Wall party?

    1. Hahaha...I got this question a few times in my IG DMs too. Erika's neighbor's across the street live on a little lake/pond. And along all their backyards is a stone retaining wall that separates their backyards from the banks of the water. And when they started throwing this part (however many years ago) they just started calling it the Wall Party because that's where it takes place. On the other side of the wall along the water. Simple as that. :)
